It's About Building a Good Foundation
What is In-School Mentoring?A fun rewarding program, In-School Mentoring matches an adult volunteer (Mentor) with a child (Mentee) in a school environment. Building a positive new friendship strengthens a Mentee's self-esteem and school performance.
This program is a co-operative effort between the District School Board of Niagara, the Niagara Catholic District School Board and Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Niagara.
In school mentoring is a modern way of delivering this traditional program. It is based on the one-to-one Mentor/Mentee relationship, but minimizes the time commitment of the volunteer.
Who participates in the Program?
The Mentor
Mentors are all ages and come from all walks of life - tradespeople, homemakers, university and college students, retirees, members of the business community. The list is endless.
As a Mentor, you will share your skills and talents with your Mentee.
It’s not necessarily about homework! This is a program that takes place at the child’s school, during the school year. The In-School Mentor spends one hour per week during the school year either doing a fun activity, just talking, assisting with a school project, or assisting with academics if so inclined with a child who could use a friend.
Throughout the school year, In-School Mentors and their Mentees can join in the fun at agency events like the annual Christmas Party or Halloween Party.
We encourage employers to give employees the time during the work day to volunteer…studies show that people who volunteer perform better on the job! If you are over the age of 17 and want to become an In-School Mentor then give us a call.
The Children
Our Mentees are elementary school students grades 2 through 8 who would benefit from a one-to-one friendship with a caring adult. This program is offered in twenty-five schools in the Welland, Port Colborne, Fonthill and Wainfleet areas.
